Our Story

In the heart of Kentucky’s rolling hills, Kalarama Farm stands as a testament to a legacy that has seamlessly blended tradition with innovation. Established in 1901 by Judge I.H. Thurman, Kalarama quickly became synonymous with the American Saddlebred, shaping the destiny of this majestic breed through a philosophy rooted in excellence and purity. The vision was clear from the outset: to create a lineage that would endure, one that Judge Thurman and his son, L. Ray Thurman, meticulously nurtured. Through their dedication, Kalarama Rex emerged, a cornerstone that set the standard for what was to become the oldest name in Saddlebred breeding.

As time marched forward, Kalarama’s journey took an unexpected turn. The farm found its way into the hands of Paul Hamilton, a twist of fate that would set the stage for a new era. Paul’s daughter, Joan Hamilton, with her roots deeply embedded in the Springfield 4-H program, soon became an integral part of Kalarama’s story. Her passion for the Saddlebred, kindled alongside her father, evolved into a quest for breeding excellence. The arrival of Harlem Globetrotter, a stallion that would ignite the show ring and elevate Kalarama’s breeding program, marked a pivotal moment. Harlem Globetrotter’s legacy, through his progeny and as a broodmare sire, solidified Kalarama’s reputation in the annals of Saddlebred history.

The narrative took another significant turn with the introduction of Mark Haupt in 2004. A visionary with a penchant for technology and a shared passion for Saddlebreds, Mark brought a fresh perspective to Kalarama. His initial involvement, stemming from a business dealing in equine software and the purchase of horses from Joan, blossomed into a partnership that would redefine Kalarama’s future. Together, Joan and Mark embarked on a journey of expansion and innovation.

The creation of the #4yroldfactory brand marked a strategic shift in Kalarama’s approach to horse training, emphasizing a foundation for young horses that was both revolutionary and effective. This initiative was just the beginning. Recognizing the volatile nature of the horse industry, Mark and Joan diversified Kalarama’s operations to include the breeding of full-blood Wagyu cattle, heritage pigs, Katahdin sheep, and the production of Kentucky honey. These endeavors, under the umbrella of Zen10 Castle Company, HappyHogs, LambLand, and BluegrassBees, respectively, not only broadened Kalarama’s agricultural footprint but also underscored a commitment to sustainable farming practices.

Today, Kalarama Farm is not just a name associated with champion American Saddlebreds; it is a beacon of diversified agriculture, where excellence in breeding and training coexists with a passion for quality and sustainability. The farm’s products, branded under VigorFoods Inc., represent the culmination of efforts to produce the best meat money can buy, a testament to the innovative spirit that drives Kalarama.

As we look to the future, the legacy of the Thurman family, carried forward by Joan Hamilton and Mark Haupt, remains a guiding light. Kalarama Farm stands as a symbol of excellence, a place where the past and present merge to create a brighter, more sustainable future. It is here, amid the beauty of Springfield, Kentucky, that the legacy of Kalarama continues to grow, nurtured by the land and by those who are committed to honoring its rich history while forging new paths of innovation.
