Kathadin Sheep
From a small beginning
Our journey into sheep farming began modestly in 2018 with just 14 ewes. Cautious not to overextend ourselves before fully understanding the intricacies of sheep husbandry, we recognized early on that mastering the care and management of sheep comes with a steep learning curve. Indeed, sheep farming is a challenging venture, demanding resilience and dedication far beyond the capacities of the faint-hearted.
Today, our flock has grown to approximately 200 ewes, a testament to our commitment and the valuable experience gained over these years. Looking ahead, our ambition is to expand the flock to 1,000 ewes. This expansion is not just about numbers; it’s about establishing ourselves as a reliable and consistent supplier in the market, ensuring the highest quality of care for our animals while meeting the growing demand for our products.
Starting right
In line with our commitment to excellence across all our farming ventures, we place great emphasis on starting with high-quality foundation stock for our sheep. We were fortunate to initially acquire some superior, registered stock from Howard Brown, setting a strong genetic baseline for our flock. Subsequently, we enriched our herd with select commercial ewes, originating from full-blooded lineage, further enhancing the diversity and quality of our stock.
A significant milestone in our sheep farming journey was the acquisition of an exceptional ram, Tom Tom, purchased from Toby Bowland. Featured in the accompanying photograph, Tom Tom has proven to be a remarkable addition to our farm. His first lambs, born in the spring of 2021, have inherited their sire’s impressive size and substance, marking a new chapter in our operation. With this robust foundation, we’re now poised to pursue sheep farming with renewed vigor and purpose, confident in the quality and potential of our flock.
